5, Jun 2023 | nepaltraveller.com

If you seek an adventure off the beaten path where nature's serenity reigns supreme, Rara Lake is the perfect destination.

Rara Lake, also known as Mahendra Lake, is the largest freshwater lake in the Nepalese Himalayas. It serves as the centerpiece of Rara National Park, which spans an expansive area of 106 square kilometers. The lake was officially incorporated into the national park in 1976, prompting the relocation of residents from the villages of Chapra and Rara to Nepalgunj. Recognized for its ecological significance, Rara Lake was designated a Ramsar site in September 2007, encompassing 1,583 hectares of land, including the surrounding wetlands.

The lake, situated at an elevation of 2,990 meters, stretches across a water surface of 10.8 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 167 meters. It exhibits mesmerizing color changes throughout the day, influenced by the ever-changing climate. Encircled by lush hills such as Chuchemara Danda at 4,087 meters and Murma at 3,630 meters, Rara Lake offers a magnificent view of the Himalayan Range's majestic Saipal Mountain.

A complete circumnavigation of the lake on foot takes approximately five hours, and during the summer season, the area becomes a temporary habitat for migrating birds, including species from as far away as Siberia. Get ready to embark on an adventure filled with breathtaking views, captivating wildlife, and the warm embrace of nature.

Day 1: Flight to Jumla and Apple Orchards

Our adventure begins with a thrilling flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla, a vibrant town renowned for its exquisite apples. As we touch down, the tantalizing aroma of fresh apples fills the air, enticing us to explore the famous orchards. Walking amidst the lush trees, we savor the sweet essence of nature, sampling the crisp and juicy apples along the way. This delightful experience sets the tone for the incredible journey that lies ahead.

Day 2: Trekking into the Wilderness

With our backpacks securely fastened, we set off on a 2- to 3-day hike towards Rara Lake. Leaving behind the bustling town, we venture into the remote countryside, where the tranquility of nature envelops us. Each step brings us closer to the Tibetan border, away from the beaten path frequented by crowds of trekkers. It's a refreshing change to experience the untouched beauty of the Himalayas.

Day 3: Juniper Forests and the Enchanting Rara Lake

As we ascend further, the landscape transforms into a mesmerizing tapestry of juniper forests. The sweet scent of juniper fills the air, invigorating our senses. We navigate through the trails, our anticipation growing with every passing moment. Suddenly, the emerald green hues of Rara Lake come into view, surrounded by majestic hills. A rush of serenity washes over us as we find ourselves in the presence of such untouched beauty.

Day 4: Boating and Hiking in Paradise

We indulged in the wonders of Rara Lake. With boats gently gliding on the crystal-clear waters, we explore the vast expanse of the lake, admiring the reflections of the surrounding hills. The stillness of the lake is occasionally interrupted by the playful jump of a snow trout, a testament to the rich aquatic life. We hike up the nearby hills, eager to capture panoramic vistas of the lake and the snow-capped peaks that adorn the horizon.

Day 5: Wildlife Encounters and Birdwatching

Rara National Park offers a sanctuary for a diverse array of flora and fauna. We embark on a wildlife expedition, hoping to catch glimpses of the rare and endangered species that call this region home. As we traverse through the park, we encounter the elusive red panda, the graceful musk deer, and the majestic Himalayan black bear. Our binoculars are always at the ready as we spot colorful birds soaring through the skies or perched on the branches. The park truly is a haven for nature enthusiasts.

Day 6: Chuchemara Hill and the Finale

Our adventure nears its end as we ascend Chuchemara Hill, standing tall at 4,087 meters. From this vantage point, we are blessed with a breathtaking view of Rara Lake's deep blue waters, the lush forested hillsides, and the snow-capped peaks that seem to touch the heavens. Time stands still as we soak in the magnificence of nature, grateful for the opportunity to witness such grandeur.
