Manungkot: Tanahun’s Hilltop Paradise for Sunrise, Views and Quiet Escape

13, Jan 2026 | nepaltraveller.com

Discover Manungkot in Tanahun, a scenic hilltop viewpoint near Damauli offering stunning sunrise views of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges, easily accessible from Kathmandu via the Prithvi Highway.

Cradled into the gentle hills of Vyas Municipality in Tanahun District, Manungkot has quietly emerged as one of central Nepal’s most rewarding viewpoints. With sweeping vistas of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges, comfortable access from Damauli, and a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts Nepal’s busier hill stations, Manungkot is a must-visit for anyone seeking mountain panoramas without long treks.

Why Visit Manungkot?

Unlike crowded tourist hubs, Manungkot offers:

  • Compact and rewarding access: no multi-day treks required.

  • Spectacular sunrise views over the Himalayas on clear mornings.

  • 360-degree panoramas of terraced hills, rivers, and distant peaks.

  • A serene, photogenic setting perfect for landscape photography, camping, and slow travel.

Best Views in Nepal Without the Long Hike

At roughly 1,000- 1,200 metres above sea level, Manungkot sits high enough to command broad horizons yet low enough to be reachable with a short drive from the nearest urban center. Its strategic position makes it especially popular among:

  • Weekend travellers from Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan.

  • Photography enthusiasts chasing golden light.

  • Couples and families looking for a quick scenic getaway.

On a clear morning, the sky can brighten into fiery hues as the sun rises behind the majestic peaks of:

  • Annapurna I

  • Annapurna II

  • Lamjung Himal

  • Manaslu

These views, especially during cooler months from late autumn to early spring — make Manungkot an accessible alternative to longer ridge-top treks.

How to Get There

From Damauli:
Manungkot is approximately 20–30 minutes’ drive from
Damauli Bazaar. Roads are a mix of paved and gravel sections, navigable by car, motorbike, or local jeep services.

From Kathmandu:
Manungkot lies approximately 161 km from Kathmandu via the Prithvi Highway, with the journey taking around five hours in total. The route is not a direct single-vehicle trip. Travellers head towards Pokhara, disembark at Damauli, Tanahun: about 150 km from Kathmandu and 43 km from
Pokhara, and then continue by local bus or taxi, followed by a short uphill walk to reach the viewpoint.

Because of its proximity to major road networks, Manungkot is ideal for:

  • Road trippers

  • Last-minute weekend plans

  • Groups with limited trekking time

When to Go

Best seasons:

  • October to April: crisp air and clear skies for mountain views.

  • Early mornings offer the most impressive sunrises and tend to have better clarity.

Avoid:

  • Monsoon months (June-September), when clouds and rain often obscure distant peaks.

Tips for Travellers

  • Dress in layers: hilltop winds can be cool even after sunrise.

  • Bring a wide-angle lens for panoramic photography.

  • Arrive at least 30-40 minutes before sunrise for the best light.

  • Local teahouses and viewpoints offer simple snacks and seating.
