Six leopards including a cub died in different places of Tanahu in the fiscal year 2019/20. Of them, five were found dead in Bhanu municipality and one in Byas municipality, according to the Division Forest Office, Tanahu.

Likewise, the office rescued eight leopards including five from Bhanu, two from Badipur and one from Byas municipalities and released them to different national and animal parks. During the period, four deer and one python were also rescued and left in the jungle, said assistant forest officer at the office Baburam Upreti.

The wild cat species were responsible for the death of six children in the district. A man and a woman were also attacked and injured during the year. Likewise, the forest office has recorded 48 incidents of attack by leopards on domestic animals during the year.

Chief of the Office Kedar Baral said leopards have been wandering into human settlements in search of food, which has been depleting inside the forests. Hence, the food species needs to be preserved as the wild animal plays an important role in the ecological balance.
