When I reached the hotel I sat in the courtyard admiring its traditional architecture. A part of me felt as if I was in a monastery. With thangkas and prayer wheels adorning the walls and Buddhist chaityas at the reception and lobby, it gives you a feel you’re not in one of the busiest parts of Kathmandu.
The rooms are well lit, spacious and modern, with small balconies overlooking the courtyard. The rooms are well equipped with a comfy bed, TV, safe and tea making facilities and a large size bathroom with plenty of hot water. I like the way the rooms have been tastefully decorated making sure the hotel gives its guests a complete Nepali experience. What I liked the most is every room has a name tag of the guests staying in the room which definitely gives it a homely feel.
Dalai-La’s flagship restaurant, The Hub, serves authentic Italian and Continental cuisine. It offers a scrumptious menu offering the best of the seasons, locally sourced, for the best of taste and is open all day for the guests. I would recommend that you have your meals in the peaceful courtyard and if you’re in Nepal for the first time you should try some of their Nepali classics. The bar is called 05.10.14 and serves a variety of drinks from around the world. After all, a fine conversation does start with a sip or two. They also have live music on Tuesdays and Fridays and if you ask for a cultural dance performance they will make you get to witness that as well.
The owner Prem believes customer satisfaction is very important and at Dalai-la you are never let down. To make sure the patrons are taken care of they have a travel desk available in the hotel itself to cater to all your needs regarding ticketing and transportation all over Nepal.
You can pamper yourself at their in house spa which is devoted to enhance the overall well-being that encourages the renewal of body mind and spirit. You can also keep up with your fitness routine while you’re away with their free in-house gym. For those interested, you can also do some yoga at Dalai-la.
Thamel comprises of many streets and shops and restaurants. It can be chaotic sometimes but Dalai-La is a piece of heaven in this chaotic but lovely place. Once you step inside the premises of Dalai-La, you will forget that you’re in Thamel. The ambiance and vibes of the entire place leave you feeling rested and ready to take on your Kathmandu adventures.
