Amid the busy city of Kathmandu, the Garden of Dreams once used to be a private Royal Garden of late Field Marshal Kaiser Sumsher. Designed and supervised by Kishore Narshingh, a prominent architect of his time, it was known to be one of the elegant gardens of that era. It lies in the center of Kathmandu Valley, Thamel, dating from the early 1920s. The neoclassical garden was brought back to life with restoration between 2000 and 2007 with the support of Austrian Development Aid in collaboration with the Nepal Ministry of Education.

The garden has now become a tourist landmark and a place for a short escape for many people residing inside the city. The architecture of the garden is very alluring with the added aroma of fresh flora; the place is the perfect spot to spend some time in silence and peace. With an exquisite ensemble of pavilions, fountains, decorative garden furniture, and European inspired varandas, urns, and birdhouses, every spot will tempt you to lift your camera and capture a shot. The six free-standing pavilions inside the garden symbolize the six seasons of Nepal.

Since only half of the garden is extant, it is not very big. However, every nook and corner will make you go back again to sit and relax for a while. The garden also has a small art gallery and a restaurant operated by Dwarika’ Himalaya Shangrila Village Resort Pvt Ltd that serves international standard cuisines. Wandering inside, you will see friends, families, couples enjoying themselves, and even single people into their books or laptops or even just sun basking on the mattress available there.

The garden charges an entrance fee. For locals who enjoy this atmosphere and want to visit now and then, annual membership is the other option. At the entrance, you can also get souvenirs: T-shirts and postcards.

How to get there:

Reaching the Garden of Dreams is very simple. It is situated in Kaiser Mahal complex, Trivedi Marg located in Kanti Path.
All public vehicles going to Lainchaur from the bus stop near Sahid Gate will take you to the Garden of Dreams. And if you are near Thamel, it is just a two-minute walk from there.

Don’t forget to hop on to your best casual outfit as you surely can’t stop yourself from taking beautiful pictures in the exquisite garden. Happy Travelling!
