Located in the eastern part of Nepal, in the heart of the Khumbu region, Pheriche is a significant village on the popular Everest hiking route. The village is home to over 25 lodges, known as tea houses, which offer accommodation to adventurers on their journey to the Everest Base Camp. The majority of the local population in Pheriche consists of Sherpas, who are all Buddhists from Tibet. Pheriche has demonstrated incredible perseverance in the face of hardship despite its isolated position and small population.In April 2015, Nepal was struck by a devastating earthquake that caused widespread destruction across the country. Pheriche was heavily damaged, but fortunately, only one local resident was injured, largely because most people were outside their homes during the day. In the aftermath of the earthquake, Pheriche played a crucial role as a relief and treatment center, as well as an evacuation point for those affected.
