Resunga Hill, Gulmi: A Sunrise Pilgrimage Above Tamghas

2, Oct 2026 | nepaltraveller.com

Resunga Hill, rising above Tamghas in Gulmi, is a sacred destination known for its Himalayan sunrise views, forested trails, temples, and spiritual heritage. The article explores the sunrise experience from Resunga View Tower, religious sites, trekking routes, festivals, nature, and practical travel information for visiting this scenic hill.

Rising 2,347 meters (about 7,700 feet), Resunga Hill is the crown jewel of Gulmi District in western Nepal. Towering over the district headquarters of Tamghas, this sacred forested peak blends natural beauty, spiritual heritage, and sweeping Himalayan views. Climbing it at dawn is a journey above the mist.

The Sunrise Experience

The best spot is the Resunga View Tower in the early morning. Before sunrise, a white sea of clouds often fills the valley below. As first light arrives, snow-capped peaks glow gold and pink, with Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Machhapuchhre visible on clear days. The tower offers a roughly 180-degree panorama from the Himalayas to the Terai plains. As the sun climbs, the mist lifts to reveal terraced fields, pine forests, and villages.

A Sacred Sanctuary

Hindus revere Resunga as an ancient place of penance. Legend links its name to the sage Rishya Shringa, who is said to have meditated here. In the early 20th century, the ascetic Yadukananda Swami settled on the hill, and the Yagyashala, a sacred fire-ritual hall, was built. The Ruru-Resunga Area Conservation and Tourism Development Committee was later formed to promote religious tourism.

The summit hosts the Shivalaya and Vishnupaduka temples, while the Radha-Krishna Temple, Prabhugadi, and Yagyashala sit just below, in a garden with a gaushala and discourse hall. Sacred ponds, including Mahapokhari, draw crowds of bathers.

Nature and Trekking

A stone trail climbs from Tamghas through rhododendron, oak, and pine forest, taking roughly two to four hours. Those short on time can drive a rough road almost to the top, then climb a short flight of steps. The protected forest shelters orchids, medicinal herbs, and wildlife. Resunga Park adds sky cycling and ziplining.

Practical Information

Best time to visit: October to December for the clearest views; March to May for blooming red rhododendrons.

Getting there: Take a bus or car from Butwal or Tansen (Palpa) along the Madan Bhandari Highway to Tamghas, then hike or hire a jeep.

Festivals: Harisayani Ekadashi, Saune Aunsi, Haribodhani Ekadashi, and Maha Shivaratri bring thousands of pilgrims to worship and bathe in the ponds.

Where to stay: Basic lodging exists near the top, but Tamghas has hotels, homestays, and restaurants.

More About Resunga and Gulmi

Gulmi covers about 1,149 square kilometers and is rich in natural, cultural, historical, and archaeological sites. Besides Resunga, visitors can explore Rurudham, Vichitra Cave, Arjun Hill's Siddheshwar Cave, Charpala Historical Palace, Dhurkot, Musikot Palace, Kankedeurali, and the Kaligandaki Dam.

Resunga has also inspired Nepali music. Singer Bom Bahadur Karki, born in Gulmi, recorded one of his first songs about the hill, which became his gateway to Radio Nepal. Other artists have since sung of it too.

The Haribodhani Ekadashi fair in Kartik draws thousands, and a grand fair continues through the month of Shravan each year.
