The meaning and tradition of Linge Ping in Nepal, the iconic bamboo swing associated with Dashain. Learn how it is built, its cultural significance, and some of the best places to experience this joyful tradition across Nepal.

As Dashain arrives in Nepal, something familiar begins to appear across village fields, community grounds and open spaces: tall bamboo swings reaching towards the sky. Known as Linge Ping, this traditional bamboo swing in Nepal has been part of Dashain celebrations for generations. More than just festival entertainment, it represents joy, togetherness and one of Nepal's most cherished seasonal traditions.

What Does Linge Ping Mean?

The name Linge Ping is believed to come from the structure's shape, which resembles a Shiva Linga. But its cultural meaning goes much deeper.

A popular belief says that everyone should leave the ground at least once during Dashain, and riding the Linge Ping fulfills this tradition. Swinging high above the ground is also associated with leaving behind the troubles and burdens of the past year and welcoming the festive season with renewed energy.

The tradition also strengthens community bonds. Local people traditionally work together to collect bamboo, prepare ropes and construct the swing before Dashain, turning the process itself into a community activity.

How Is a Traditional Linge Ping Made?

A traditional Linge Ping is usually made from four long and sturdy bamboo poles secured together at the top. Strong jute or hemp ropes create the swinging section, allowing people to ride either sitting or standing. Some bamboo swings can rise more than eight metres high, adding excitement to the Dashain experience.

Traditionally, Linge Ping swings are constructed about a week before Ghatasthapana, the beginning of Dashain, and may remain until after Tihar. However, limited open spaces and declining interest among younger generations have made the tradition less common in some urban areas.

Best Places to Experience Linge Ping in Nepal

The Kathmandu Valley is one of the easiest places to experience Linge Ping during Dashain. Traditional swings can appear around community spaces and cultural areas in Bhaktapur, Changunarayan, Kirtipur and Lalitpur. The Nepal Tourism Board has also collaborated with municipalities and tourism organisations to install Linge Ping at selected tourist destinations during the festival.

For a more traditional experience, head beyond the cities. Rural communities across Nepal, including areas of Palpa and Dhading, continue to build bamboo swings in village centres and open fields, where families and neighbours gather to celebrate together.

More Than Just a Swing

Among Nepal's many Dashain traditions, Linge Ping remains one of the most joyful. The simple experience of swinging high above the ground connects childhood memories, community spirit and cultural belief. Preserving the Linge Ping tradition in Nepal means keeping alive a beautiful part of Dashain for future generations.
