Also called the “Seto Gumba” or “Druk Amitabh Mountain,” White Monastery is one of the most popular monasteries in Nepal located in Kathmandu. It is located on a northwest hill by Swayambhunath Stupa, and one can get there by an easy hike or you can also take a taxi or bus according to your convenience.

The building of the monastery is simply astounding with walls adorned with Tibetan murals, statues, and paintings depicting Buddhist teachings, in vivid colours. Once when you enter the monastery you will take a dive into the pristine lake of peace, patience, and calmness with the aroma of incense, calming monk chants and prayer flags fluttering above. The picturesque topography of White Gumba is remarkable that attracts the visitors to it. The area around the White Monastery is very peaceful and quite, one can visit it for meditation practices and also for learning about Buddhism.

It is also one of the best ways to see the landscape of Kathmandu city, take a walk around the premises of The White Monastery, where you’ll be able to hear bells and prayers resonating from the monastery. On a clear day, you can also enjoy the revealed panorama of the Himalayas. This is also said to be one of the best spots in Kathmandu to watch the sunrise and sunset.  The panoramic views, wind shouting, twittering of birds, makes you think about life and will lose time in absence.

Getting there,

You can hire a taxi from Thamel to the white monastery which can charge you about Rs. 500. Another way is that you can travel from a public vehicle but it will only take you to a junction of Ramkot, from there you have to walk for about an hour. You can also take your own vehicle but the road to the monastery is very steep. You can go by car or bike but a scooter is not recommended.
