Scores of palaces and 'dharmasalas' built during the time of the Rana rulers in Doti district are converting into ruins due to lack of proper care and maintenance. These monuments are on the verge of collapsing due to the negligence of concerned bodies.
Dharmasalas are the shelters built near the trail for travelers making long journeys to rest and spend the night in. Moreover, according to locals many dharmasalas are being used by individuals as their personal property.
"No sincere efforts have been made by the government bodies and the local levels for preservation of these historical heritages. As a result, they are on the verge of collapsing" said Dinesh Bahadur Malla, a resident of Jorayal rural municipality-3.
Several dharmasalas at Napani, Tele, and other places in Jorayal rural municipality and Shikhar municipality are now decrepit and turned into cowsheds. Doti was the main administrative headquarters of the Western District during the Rana rule and as people from neighboring districts like Bajhang, Bajura, Achham, Dadeldhura, Kalikot, and Surkhet, and also from the Tarai districts visited here for various administrative works and trekking for two-three days. The dharmasalas were built for the convenience of these people.
District Coordination Committee coordinator Ram Bahadur Aeir said it is the responsibility of all to preserve the dharmasalas and other historical monuments in the district as these are the common property of all. Further suggesting he added that these monuments can be developed into homestay to promote tourism.
