With Nepal having such biodiverse biomes and landscapes in its territory, it has long been the priority to conserve and protect such pristine marks of nature in Nepal. And in the most recent case, The Ministry of Industry, Forest, Environment and Tourism has decided to make the Ghodaghodi Wetland Area Nepal's first bird sanctuary.
The ministry announced that the area was declared as a bird sanctuary to conserve birds and promote tourism in the area. This decision was done amid a function on March 11 under the forest act implemented by the provincial government. The bill states that any part of a national forest can be declared as a protected area for endangered wildlife, bird or plant.
With Ghodaghodi being in the Ramsar Convention with 10,570 hectares of protected land protecting about 360 species of both native and migratory birds discovered with over 64 species of aquatic with 12 globally threatened bird species, it was natural for this decision to take place. The Ghodaghodi Tourism Board have stated that sanctioning this area as a bird sanctuary will help in their efforts of bird conservation. In addition, they have stated that this will be the brand of Far West Nepal with promoting tourism in the area through such activities.
