Thamel, a major tourist destination in the Kathmandu Valley, is slowly returning to normalcy.
Thamel, which has been closed for nearly eight months due to the government's ban and ban on Covid-19, has been gaining momentum.
Foreign tourists were not allowed to visit Nepal when the government closed the airport due to increasing corona infection. The Thamel area was deserted when the tourists chartered a ship to return to their homeland. With the opening of Thamel area, the number of domestic tourists has increased. Although the government declared 2020 as the Nepal Tourism Year, the program was postponed due to COVID-19.
Before the bandhbandi, there was a lot of night entertainment in Thamel every day. There was more activity on Friday and Saturday. Clubs of Thamel, which are associated with the night life of the younger generation from business houses and family gatherings, are waiting to return to the business path. More than 6,000 people have been doing business in the Thamel area.
Bhavishwar Sharma, vice-chairman of Thamel Tourism Development Council, said that tourism activities have been started in Thamel targeting domestic tourists even though foreign tourists did not come to visit Nepal due to Kovid-19. "The council is holding discussions with various agencies to start night business from this week," he said.
Eighty percent of the trade here is from foreign tourists and 20 percent from domestic tourists. The Thamel Development Council has arranged 50 percent concession in rent by holding discussions with the landlords of Thamel to prevent the entrepreneurs of the area from being displaced from here. There are more than a thousand hotels in the Thamel area.
Tourism entrepreneur Sudarshan Nepal said that Thamel should be developed as a tourist destination. "The state should benefit by conducting day and night activities in the world-famous Thamel," he said.
Thamel falls in wards 16, 17, 26 and 27 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. The largest part of Thamel falls in Ward No. 26. He said that tourist activities have increased in Thamel during Dashain and Tihar. Ninety percent of the tourists visiting Nepal visit Thamel.
Khamraj Tiwari, ward chairman of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-26, said that Thamel, which handles billions of rupees annually, should be operated in compliance with health standards. "The government and the business community must work together to restore Thamel," he said. This sector has made a great contribution to the national economy.
