Situated in the central Nepalese hills, Tansen is a charming city surrounded on the tip of the Lesser Himalaya, or Mahabharat Range

Tansen,  situated in the central Nepalese hills, is a charming city and the administrative center of Palpa District. Surrounded on the tip of the Lesser Himalaya, or Mahabharat Range, it affords a view of the peaceful Kaligandaki River valley to the north. Tansen's old-world charm continues despite the main road passing the town center to the west and lying between Butwal and Pokhara along a magnificent roadway. This thoughtful design preserves the pedestrian-friendly atmosphere within the town's central maze of steep, narrow, and twisting lanes, which are adorned with charming Newari shophouses and ancient temples.

Tansen Durbar (Palpa Durbar & Museum)

Tansen Durbar, also known as Palpa Durbar & Museum, is a significant historical palace and museum located in the town of Tansen, Nepal. Built in 1927 by Pratap Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, the Durbar served as the seat of the Rana governors during their rule in Nepal. This grand palace, however, faced destruction in 2005 during the Nepalese Civil War, when it was targeted by Maoists. It was subsequently rebuilt and reopened to the public in 2008, preserving its historical legacy.

Ranighat Palace (Rani Mahal)

Ranighat Palace, commonly referred to as Rani Mahal, is a historic Rana palace situated on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River in the Palpa district. Constructed in 1893 by General Khadga Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, this palace is often called the Taj Mahal of Nepal due to its similar romantic origin and riverbank location. Both palaces were built in memory of their creators' loved ones, adding a layer of poignancy to their majestic presence.

This gateway leads to the renowned Ranaujireshwori Bhagawati temple, regarded as the guardian deity of Tansen, and to the Tansen Durbar Square. From 1958 to 2005, the palace premises housed various district-level government offices. The history of Mul Dhoka is intertwined with the infamous Kot Massacre of September 14, 1846, in Kathmandu, where Jung Bahadur Rana seized power, leading to the autocratic Rana family rule that lasted 104 years until 1951. Many of his rivals were executed, and their properties confiscated. Jung Bahadur Rana was later appointed as Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of Nepal by the then king.
