The medicinal tree, Vaisha Dev, also known as the Toothache Tree is believed to provide relief from toothaches and other ailments

A tree that holds a special place in traditional medicine and local mythology is found nestled in the stunning landscapes of Nepal. The amazing plant known as Vaisha Dev, also called the Toothache Tree or Zanthoxylum armatum, has drawn the interest of both scientists and locals due to its tremendous medical capabilities.

The Himalayan region, which includes Nepal, is home to the deciduous tree known as Vaisha Dev. It is a member of the Rutaceae family and can grow up to 2,000 meters above sea level in Nepal's foothills and mid-hills. The tree is distinguished by its prickly branches and unusually scented leaves, which, when crushed or injured, release a lemony fragrance.

The piece of wood that has been placed right in the middle of Kathmandu's dental area, on a street corner just past Tahiti Tole, which contains a concentration of orthodontist offices, is said to be a cutting from a mythical tree known as Bangemudha. It serves as a sort of wishing well. Visitors to the location who suffer from toothaches or other dental conditions hammer coins onto the tree as a sacrifice to Vaishya Dev, the Newar god of toothaches. The main hole of the tooth god's shrine is said to contain a tiny miniature idol, but the coins glued to the log's surface prevent anyone from seeing inside the burl. In fact, the log is so coated that the wood itself can no longer be seen.

For millennia, different portions of Vaisha Dev have been utilized in traditional medicine to cure a variety of diseases. The fruits, leaves, and bark are thought to have digestive, analgesic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory qualities. Vaisha Dev gets its widespread name from the fact that it is most frequently used to treat toothaches. The bark has a numbing effect that relieves dental pain when chewed or applied topically to the troubled area. The name "Toothache Tree" comes from the tiny, hooked thorns that cover the bark and look like teeth.

In addition to its use in dental care, Vaisha Dev has also been used to treat skin infections, coughs, colds, and stomach problems. To treat a variety of diseases, the leaves are frequently brewed into tea or included in herbal remedies. Another useful product derived from Vaisha Dev is the essential oil of the tree, which is collected through steam distillation and is renowned for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

The scientific community has recently developed a significant interest in Vaisha Dev because of its possible health advantages. According to studies, the tree's active ingredients, especially hydroxy-alpha-sanshool, have antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have also shown that it can improve digestion and act as a natural painkiller.

To safeguard and maintain the Vaisha Dev tree population in Nepal, conservation activities have been launched. The species has experienced certain problems as a result of overharvesting and habitat degradation. To safeguard the survival of this unique tree, however, awareness campaigns and programs supporting sustainable harvesting practices are being implemented.
