Gateway to the famous Bardiya National Park

Located in the western Terai region of Nepal, Gulariya is a municipality and administrative headquarters of Bardiya. The elevation of Gulariya city is only 187m from the sea level. The municipality has a total area of 118 square kilometers. The city is very active and lively. Murtiha road or Bhansar road is the main and oldest business hub of the city consisting of book-shops, cosmetics shops, home appliances, fancy shops and many other necessary goods shops. The city lies along the bank of the Babai River.

Gulariya

At the time of the 2011 Nepal census, it had a population of 55,747 and 11,220 households. Tharu people are the original inhabitants of this area. Nepali is spoken by the hilly people while the indigenous people's mother tongue being Awadhi and Tharu language, which is understood and normally spoken by the entire population of the district. Gulariya being the Terai is extremely hot in summer and chilly in the winter and affects the lifestyle of the people. People wear light cotton clothes and rarely come out during the day time in summer while in winter, people wear thick woolen clothes.

Getting There

Gulariya has a good road connection to the rest of Nepal by roadway. The city is 550 km from Kathmandu and can take about 11-12 hours on a local bus. The best way to explore the city is by cycle rickshaws, local bus, taxies and electric rickshaws. They are found almost everywhere ready to take you to your desired location.

The district doesn't have an airport. However, if you are in a time crunch, then the closest airport is Nepalgunj Airport. Gulariya is 44km from the airport and can take 1 hour to reach. Regular buses and taxis leave from the airport to Gulariya. Yeti Airlines, Nepal Airlines, Buddha Air have been providing their service to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu and other parts of the country. 

Mid-September till mid-December and start of February to end May are the ideal times to visit the Gulariya. During this period, the temperatures range from 25-37 degrees, making the exploring process more pleasant. And the animals of the region can also be easily spotted around the water bodies.
