Just north of Kathmandu, Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is a protected area covering 159 square kilometers, known for its rich biodiversity, scenic hiking trails, and role as a crucial water source for the valley.

Established in 2002, Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park (SNNP) is Nepal’s ninth national park, located in the central Himalayan foothills. It is named after Shivapuri Peak (2,732m), the second-highest point in the Kathmandu Valley. The park is a major attraction for nature enthusiasts, offering diverse flora and fauna, panoramic Himalayan views, and historic religious sites. It also serves as an essential water catchment area, supplying drinking water to Kathmandu Valley.


Biodiversity and Wildlife


The park has a subtropical to temperate climate, with dense forests of oak, rhododendron, pine, and bamboo. It is home to 125 species of mushrooms, 2,122 flowering plant species, and 129 species of ferns.

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park supports a variety of wildlife, including:

Mammals: Himalayan black bear (Ursus thibetanus), leopard (Panthera pardus), jungle cat (Felis chaus), golden jackal (Canis aureus), barking deer (Muntiacus muntjak), wild boar (Sus scrofa), and rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Birds: Over 318 species, including the spotted forktail, Eurasian eagle-owl, Himalayan griffon, and Nepalese cutia.

Reptiles and Amphibians: The park hosts herpetofauna like pit vipers, king cobras, and numerous frog species.

The park is famous for its well-maintained hiking trails, leading to religious and scenic sites. Popular routes include:

Shivapuri Peak Hike (2,732m)

Starting point: Budhanilkantha

Distance: 12 km round trip

Highlights: Panoramic views of the Langtang, Ganesh, and Gaurishankar ranges.

Nagi Gompa Trail

Starting point: Budhanilkantha

Distance: 4 km round trip

Highlights: A peaceful Buddhist nunnery offering meditation retreats and stunning valley views.

Baghdwar Trail

Starting point: Budhanilkantha

Distance: 6 km round trip

Highlights: The source of the sacred Bagmati River and religious shrines.

Sundarijal Waterfall & Chisapani Hike

Starting point: Sundarijal

Distance: 22 km (multi-day trek to Chisapani, part of the Helambu Circuit)

Highlights: Scenic waterfalls, dense forests, and interactions with Tamang communities.


Religious and Cultural Significance


Budhanilkantha Temple: A sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located near the park’s entrance.

Nagi Gompa: A Buddhist monastery known for meditation retreats and home to Tibetan nuns.

Baghdwar: Considered the holy source of the Bagmati River, attracting Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims.


Best Time to Visit


The park is open year-round, but the best seasons for hiking and wildlife observation are:

Spring (March–May): Blooming rhododendrons and clear mountain views.

Autumn (September–November): Ideal weather with crisp air and clear skies.

Winter (December–February): Chilly but offers excellent visibility for mountain viewing.

Monsoon (June–August): Lush greenery but leech-infested and muddy trails.


How to Get There


Budhanilkantha Entrance: 12 km from Kathmandu city center, accessible by local buses, taxis, or private vehicles.

Sundarijal Entrance: 15 km from Kathmandu, reachable by public transport or taxis.
