Trek to Ghandruk: Your Travel Itinerary

Enjoy the magnificent sight as the sun’s first rays enwrap the Annapurna range while enjoying tea and Gurung Bread

Located at 2012 metres above sea level, Ghandruk—owing to its physical proximity to the mountains– offers an unmatched ethereal view of the Annapurna range. The village is a closed Gundruk settlement with pebbled paths and traditional houses, the biggest attractions of the village, apart from the panoramic view, are its culture and cuisine.

How to get to Ghandruk?

You can either trek for 6 hours from Nayapul (1050m), take a local bus, or rent a car on a 4-hour drive from Pokhara. A fair warning, though, you need to walk up to your hotel from the bottom of the village, a vehicle can only take you so far. So if you get tired from walking easily, you might want to reconsider a trip to Ghandruk.

When to go to Ghandruk?

Monsoon is the best time to trek to Ghandruk because you get a clean nature in its bare essences with an even more enhanced experience. You also get a closer view of the clouds, which is magnificent, to say the least. A clean village also warrants good air, a good mood and a refreshing travel experience.

Where to stay and what to do?

Gurung Bread, a popular dish at Ghandruk, is found at pretty much every homestay and hotel in the village, although the quality may differ depending on where you stay. Gurung Cottage, located at the village top, has arguably the best hospitality service (and the best Gurung Bread) you can find in Ghandruk—the owner is also the chairman of the local tourism board. The cottage has clean rooms with and without attached bathrooms depending on price range and availability. If you want to stay at Gurung Cottage, it would be smart to make a reservation at least two days beforehand with the flood of tourists visiting the village throughout the year.

However, if you are looking for a more authentic experience, you can also find homestays in the village that provide equally good hospitality. Ashwin Homestay, Aashish Aama Homestay, Karan Arjun Homestay are popular. If you get to Ghandruk sometime in the day or the evening, you would want to freshen up and visit the village’s museum, which is one of its attractions and reflective of the village's culture.

Now coming onto Ghandruk’s magnum opus, the tantalising sunrise. To capture the sunrise at Ghandruk, you need to wake up as early as 6 AM, which is worth every bit of it because you will not find a sight so grand, so unblemished anywhere else.

As the sun’s first rays enwrap the mountains, you can enjoy the view and even take pictures over tea or breakfast.
