Places to visit in Shanghai

The Bund

The Bund is a landmark of Shanghai and is full of history and culture. The Bund is a mile-long circular stretch of waterfront promenade along the Huangpu River. To the west of this stretch stand 52 buildings of various architectural styles, including Gothic, baroque, and neoclassical styles. It is often referred to as "the museum of buildings". The best time to visit is before sunset. You can enjoy the sunset over the Huangpu River and stay until late evening to gaze at Shanghai's spectacular skyline.

Nanjing Road

Nanjing road is one of the world’s busiest shopping street and the main shopping street in Shanghai.  Nanjing Road is located in the city centre, running in a west-east direction. Its eastern section in Huangpu District and extends from The Bund west to People's Square. The western section begins at People's Square and continues westward towards Jing’an District. Nanjing Road is the world's longest shopping district, around 5.5 km long, and is known to attract over 1 million visitors daily.

Jade Buddha Temple

The Jade Buddha Temple lies on the western part of Shanghai. The two precious jade Buddha statues present in the temple are not only rare cultural relics but also porcelain artworks. The sparkling and crystal-clear white jade gives the Buddhas the beauty of sanctity and make them more vivid. The Jade Buddha Temple is a good place to go whether you are a Buddhist or not, the peaceful and transcendent atmosphere adds a kind of richness to our busy modern society.

Shanghai Ocean Aquarium

Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is the biggest sea aquarium in Asia which covers an area of about 13,000 square meters with a total construction area of over more than 20,000 square meters. Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is designed to provide the insight in almost all sea species that can be found in Asia. The aquarium includes a 168-meter tunnel that takes visitors through a coastal reef, Open Ocean, a kelp cave, shark cove, and a coral reef, and is one of the longest such tunnels in the world. The aquarium takes visitors through several exhibit zones, including China Zone, South America Zone, Africa Zone, etc. A beautiful destination to understand the world of ocean and gain knowledge at the same time.

Yu Garden

Yu Garden is an exquisite artistic style garden, with beautiful architecture believed to have been built in the Ming Dynasty, more than 400 years ago. The beauty and the layout makes the garden one of the main highlights of Shanghai. A must visit place if you want to admire the natural beauty away from the modern structures.

Travel Note:

Five airlines fly from Kathmandu to Shanghai every 3 hours. Alternatively, bus leaves from Kathmandu to Shanghai via Kathmandu, Lhasa Liuwu Coach Station, Lasa West Suburb Coach Station, Lanzhou, Lanzhou, and Yinchuan Nanmen Station in around 3 days 17 h.

Inside Shanghai

Shanghai serves as an important air, rail, road and water transport hub in eastern China. Therefore frequent flights, trains and buses make one's travel a breeze in Shanghai. The urban transportation is also good with the use of Metro trains. Despite the traffic jam that do happen occasionally, the convenient taxis, buses etc. can take you to any corner of the city conveniently.
