From glowing oil lamps and colourful rangoli to Deusi Bhailo and Bhai Tika, discover how Nepal celebrates one of its most beautiful festivals.

As autumn settles across Nepal, streets and homes begin to shine with colourful lights, marigold garlands and traditional oil lamps.

The sound of Deusi Bhailo fills neighbourhoods, while families prepare sweets and gather for celebrations. This is Tihar, Nepal's Festival of Lights, a five-day celebration of faith, prosperity, nature and family relationships.

Celebrated after Dashain, Tihar offers travellers a wonderful opportunity to experience Nepal's cultural heritage beyond its mountains and trekking trails.

Tihar 2026 will be celebrated from November 7 to 11, with each day carrying its own religious and cultural significance. According to Kathmandu Metropolitan City's calendar, Laxmi Puja falls on November 8, while Bhai Tika takes place on November 11.

The Five Days of Tihar and Their Significance

The festival begins with Kaag Tihar on November 7, when crows are honoured as messengers of Yama, the Hindu god of death.

On November 8, Kukur Tihar celebrates dogs for their loyalty and protection. Dogs receive tika, flower garlands and special food. The same evening, families observe Laxmi Puja, decorating homes with diyos, rangoli and lights to welcome the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Gai Tihar follows on November 9, honouring cows for their religious and cultural importance.

November 10 marks Govardhan Puja, Goru Tihar and Mha Puja. The Newar community celebrates Mha Puja, a traditional ritual of self-worship associated with Nepal Sambat New Year.

The festival concludes with Bhai Tika on November 11, when sisters apply colourful tika to their brothers and pray for their health and long lives.
