Gurja Khani: Discover Nepal’s Hidden Himalayan Village in Myagdi

3, Nov 2026 | nepaltraveller.com

Hidden beneath the towering Gurja Himal, Gurja Khani is a remarkable mountain village where centuries-old traditions, breathtaking landscapes and a rich mining history come together.

Far from Nepal’s crowded trekking destinations, Gurja Khani, often called the Hidden Village of Nepal, offers a different Himalayan experience. Located in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality–1 of Myagdi District, Gandaki Province, this remote settlement lies at approximately 2,650 metres above sea level, beneath the magnificent Gurja Himal (7,193 metres).

Surrounded by rugged mountains, forests and traditional stone houses, Gurja Khani is one of the lesser-explored destinations in western Nepal, attracting travellers interested in authentic village life, cultural heritage and off-the-beaten-path adventures.

A Village with a Rich Copper Mining History

Gurja Khani's identity is closely connected to its copper-mining past. The word Khani means mine in Nepali, reflecting the settlement's historical importance.

The village developed around copper mining, with the indigenous Chhantyal community working as miners and Bishwakarma artisans processing the extracted metal. Although mining eventually declined, abandoned tunnels and local traditions continue to reflect this heritage.

Today, agriculture, livestock farming and emerging rural tourism support the local community.

Traditional Culture and Himalayan Beauty

Gurja Khani is known for its traditional stone-built houses, terraced fields and peaceful mountain environment. The village is predominantly inhabited by Chhantyal and Dalit communities, whose cultural practices and traditional lifestyles remain important parts of local identity.

A popular local saying captures the village's remarkable setting:

"Tuppi Mathi Thau Chaina, Gurja Mathi Gauw Chaina," meaning there is no place above the crown of the head and no village higher than Gurja.

Beyond its cultural charm, the region offers spectacular views of Gurja Himal, Dhaulagiri and surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Trekking and Adventure in Gurja Khani

The Gurja Khani Trek is a rewarding experience for travellers seeking quieter Himalayan trails. Traditional routes pass through Dharapani and Lulang before crossing Gurja Deorali Pass at approximately 3,250 metres.

Visitors can explore alpine landscapes, traditional villages, old mining sites and scenic mountain trails. Local homestays also provide opportunities to experience rural hospitality while supporting community-based tourism.

How to Reach Gurja Khani

Travellers can begin their journey from Pokhara, travelling through Beni towards the Dhaulagiri region.

The Lulang–Gurja road connection, established in 2026, has significantly improved access to the village. However, sections remain challenging, particularly during the monsoon, making local road-condition checks essential before travelling.

For those looking to discover hidden places in Nepal, Gurja Khani offers more than beautiful mountain scenery. Its mining heritage, traditional culture and peaceful Himalayan surroundings make it a distinctive destination worth exploring.
