On June 3rd, the UN approved Turkey's official request to alter its name and rebrand as Türkiye.
The Turkish government since January had been lobbying to change the country’s name officially with the intention to improve its brand image.
The conflict with the name Turkey arose as it clashed with the edible bird, indigenous to America which may have caused negative diplomatic implications to the Turkish government.
CNN clains, ‘There may be political motivations behind the move as Turks return to the polls next June amid a biting economic crisis.’
According to UN Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, received an official letter on June 1 from the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlüt Cavuşolu, asking to use the term ‘Türkiye’ instead of ‘Turkey’.
Although the two terms sound similar, Türkiye has an additional syllable at the end that is pronounced ‘yay’.
Turkey started the official maneuver of rebranding by changing its name to Türkiye, following the lead of the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and Czechia.
