Kathmandu, November 16, 2024 – Ushering in the holiday season, Kathmandu Marriott Hotel, in collaboration with Fairfield by Marriott Kathmandu, celebrated its annual Cake Mixing Ceremony at 4:00 PM, marking a festive 50-day countdown to the New Year. This cherished tradition, rooted in 17th-century Europe, brings the community together to prepare for Christmas and the upcoming holidays.
Originally a harvest festival in England, cake mixing involved families gathering to blend ingredients for their Christmas cakes weeks in advance. At Kathmandu Marriott, the ceremony featured an array of ingredients including almonds, cashews, raisins, dates, figs, dried cherries, pistachios, candied fruits, cinnamon, nutmeg, and more, combined with all-purpose flour in precise ratios. The mixture was soaked in a blend of rum, brandy, wine, and fruit juices, then sealed in airtight containers to mature over 2-5 weeks, ensuring rich flavors for the holiday desserts.
Vishal Mehra, the Cluster General Manager of Kathmandu Marriott, highlighted the essence of the event, stating, “It’s an opportunity to celebrate community, sustainability, and the flavors of the holidays.” His words resonated with the spirit of the occasion, emphasizing the hotel's dedication to sustainability and community engagement.
Dignitaries, ambassadors, corporate leaders, hotel staff, chefs, and media representatives enthusiastically joined the ceremony, which set the stage for the hotel’s Christmas festivities. The prepared mixture will be used to craft an array of signature desserts, including cakes, cookies, pastries, and muffins, delighting guests and underprivileged children from Baby Life Home, Blind Children Educational Center, and Mendies Haven, among others, during special events like Thanksgiving, the Tree Lighting Ceremony, and the Advent Calendar celebration from December 1st to 25th.
